Abstract
Purpose: To examine the nature and meaning of peer counseling experiences for individuals with disabilities.
Method: To provide basic data to increase the quality of peer counseling for people with disabilities by applying Giorgi's phenomenological methodology.
Results: Participants of disability peer counseling showed an improvement in self-esteem. Counselors with disabilities experienced an increase in positive thoughts regarding disability acceptance. However, opinions vary among individuals with disabilities regarding the qualifications required to secure a consultation with a colleague with disabilities.
Conclusion: Peer counseling is one of the most effective ways for individuals with disabilities to learn how to successfully adapt and live with a disability. Suggestions, such as systematic qualification procedures are discussed.
